Where to Get a Free Eye Test in the UK (And Who Qualifies)
Who gets a free NHS eye test?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you're entitled to a free eye test paid for by the NHS if you meet any of these criteria:
- You're aged 60 or over
- You're under 16 (or under 19 and in full-time education)
- You have diabetes or glaucoma
- You're aged 40+ and a close relative has glaucoma
- You receive certain benefits (Income Support, Universal Credit, Pension Credit, etc.)
- You're registered blind or partially sighted
- You need complex lenses (power above ±10 dioptres)
In Scotland, everyone is entitled to a free NHS eye test — regardless of age or income. It's one of the few areas where Scotland's healthcare policy outpaces the rest of the UK.
What happens during the test?
A standard eye test takes 20–30 minutes. The optometrist will check your vision sharpness, eye muscle coordination, pressure inside the eye (a puff-of-air test), and the health of your retina using a bright light. They'll also ask about family eye history and any medications you take.
At the end, you'll receive a prescription (if needed) and a recommendation for when to return — usually every one or two years.
Where to book
High-street opticians like Specsavers, Vision Express, Boots Opticians and independent practices all accept NHS eye-test vouchers. You can book online or walk in. If you qualify, the optician claims the fee directly from the NHS — you pay nothing.
Even if you don't qualify for a free test, high-street chains often run promotions where a full eye test costs £10–£25. It's one of the best-value health checks you can get.
