How to get a free eye test in the UK.

Most adults over 40 qualify for an NHS-funded eye test. Here's who's eligible, what's checked, and how to book one this week.

Who qualifies for a free NHS eye test

  • Anyone aged 60 or over
  • Anyone under 16, or 16-18 in full-time education
  • People with diagnosed diabetes or glaucoma
  • People aged 40+ with a close relative who has glaucoma
  • People on Income Support, Pension Credit Guarantee, JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (with conditions)
  • Everyone living in Scotland - eye tests are free for all residents

What happens in the appointment

A standard NHS sight test takes 20-30 minutes and covers your vision, prescription, eye pressure, and a check of the back of the eye. If you're in your 40s or 50s and starting to need reading glasses, the optometrist will note your near-vision prescription - exactly what we'll ask for when UK presbyopia drops launch.

Where to book

High-street chains have the most availability. Independent opticians often have shorter waits and more time per appointment.
